Strengthening Communities and Transforming Lives

About Us Site Menu:
Home... the very word conjures up feelings of warmth, security, and comfort for most of us. A home can be an apartment, mobile home, town home, single-family residence, or whatever else you want it to be. Neighborhood Housing Services of the Inland Empire, Inc. is all about helping you create and sustain a home – whether it is helping you purchase your first home, or helping you renovate a home you have owned for many years.

NHSIE is an affiliate of NeighborWorks® America which was established by Congress in 1978 to increase the capacity of local community-based housing organizations like NHSIE to revitalize their communities, particularly by expanding and improving housing opportunities. Founded in 1981 by three WWII veterans who wanted to make homeownership available to African-Americans in San Bernardino, NHSIE has grown to become a comprehensive not-for-profit community-based housing organization serving residents throughout San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

Our Services range from providing in-depth homeownership education for prospective homeowners to hands-on maintenance workshops for current homeowners. We help residents avoid predatory lenders, clean up their credit record, purchase the right homeowner insurance, prevent foreclosure, locate affordable first and second mortgage financing for down payments, closing costs, or renovation – to name just a few of the services we offer week in and week out.

NHSIE also works at the state, county and city levels to develop sophisticated housing initiatives that effectively promote reinvestment in declining older neighborhoods. NHSIE is proud to administer the $3 million beautification grant for the city of San Bernardino. Homeowners who qualify can receive up to $15,000 in funding for renovations and improvements like new roofing, driveways, windows, and doors to name just a few.

Most of all, NHSIE is about partnering with public and private entities to leverage funding for the greatest return on investment – this means we are focused on creating sustainable communities of choice, where the impact of our support is evident over the long term. Banking, lending, insurance, realty, public and private foundations, businesses and corporations are NHSIE’s primary collaborative partners in bringing the programs and services to the residents of the Inland Empire. Community investment not only is a powerful force that leads to a renaissance in low-wealth communities across America, more importantly, investment transforms people.

We want to help homeowners meet their neighbors and create support networks that promote safety, pride in ownership, and active civic involvement. Through programs like “Make a Difference Day” where neighbors get together and help each other transform their battered properties and neighborhood eyesores into places of beauty and pride, also can grow into community leaders through NeighborWorks® Community Building and Organizing Initiative. To ensure that community development is sustainable, NeighborWorks® trains a force of resident leaders to take responsibility for results, and recruit other neighbors to join them.

Even though the gap between purchasing power, funding, and available affordable homes widens due in no small part to the escalating housing prices throughout the Inland Empire, NHSIE makes the dream of homeownership a reality for many each year. NHSIE recognizes the many benefits of homeownership to a community – continuity and stability, longer-term residents, increased wealth due to equity that can be passed from one generation to the next which consequently breaks the cycle of poverty – to enhanced civic involvement and higher high school and college graduation rates for their children.

As a not-for-profit organization, NHSIE is governed by a group of dedicated volunteer Board of Directors who provide oversight and guidance to the organization.
